Our Man In The Field is the result of a mid-life epiphany. In 2014, Ellis found himself in the hospital under observation for intense abdominal pains. Tests were conducted and a tumor was discovered; further worrying, as a similar growth led to his father’s death in his 40s. As Ellis awaited treatment, he reflected on his dad’s life – hard work in a job he didn’t like, with no ability to enjoy the fruits of his labor before he passed – and realized he needed to make some changes to avoid the same fate.Until then Ellis had been an actor, landing commercials and other gigs to keep him afloat until the next audition, but never catapulting him to a fulfilling life in the profession. Paired with a particularly denigrating commercial acting role, the health scare begged the question – What do you want to do? And what Ellis thought of most while bored and anxious in the hospital bed wasn’t the auditions or commercial gigs but playing his guitar and the freedom and expression of songwriting. Our Man In The Field est le résultat d’une révélation survenue au milieu de la vie. En 2014, Ellis s’est retrouvé à l’hôpital en observation pour d’intenses douleurs abdominales. Des tests ont été effectués et une tumeur a été découverte, ce qui est d’autant plus inquiétant qu’une tumeur similaire a entraîné la mort de son père à l’âge de 40 ans. En attendant le traitement, Ellis réfléchit à la vie de son père – un travail acharné dans un emploi qu’il n’aimait pas, sans pouvoir profiter des fruits de son labeur avant sa mort – et réalise qu’il doit faire quelques changements pour éviter le même sort.Jusqu’alors, Ellis avait été acteur, décrochant des publicités et d’autres contrats pour le maintenir à flot jusqu’à la prochaine audition, mais sans jamais le catapulter vers une vie épanouie dans la profession. Associée à un rôle d’acteur commercial particulièrement dénigrant, la crise de santé a soulevé la question suivante : « Que voulez-vous faire ? Et ce à quoi Ellis pensait le plus, alors qu’il s’ennuyait et était anxieux dans son lit d’hôpital, ce n’était pas aux auditions ou aux concerts commerciaux, mais à sa guitare et à la liberté et à l’expression que lui procurait l’écriture de chansons.
